Outdoor sketching

A few recent outdoor sketches.

When sketching with a pen I prefer a smooth surface paper.  For these sketches I used the hot pressed 140 paper Arches Aquarelle Carnet de Voyage, 6 x 10 inches in size.

My sketching kit consists of my old favorite Rotring Artpen with its watersoluble ink cartridges.  I quite often dilute the ink with a Holbein Waterbrush pen. The plastic barrel of the waterbrush pen is filled with water and you squeeze the barrel to release the water.  The synthetic hair brush tip allows quite a variety of washes, strokes and effects.

I recently started using Derwent Inktense Blocks which are watersoluble ink blocks that can be used dry or diluted with the waterbrush to create colour patterns or washes. They are very easy to carry around, and the colour effects can be very light or quite intense, as desired.

"Petit matin", a pastel on canvas

Petit matin (12 x 9 inches), pastel on canvas.

In this painting I collaged on the canvas scrap papers on which I had printed ghost monoprints. I further covered the surface in an irregular manner with plaster compound onto which I dropped bits of dry pigment. I worked with hard and soft pastels, taking advantage of the irregular surface and random tones and colours on the canvas.

"Un ourson attendait" awarded The Arts Club Special First Prize

Un ourson attendait (20x13 inches), an original monochrome pastel painting on paper, of my teddy bear (ourson) series, was awarded The Arts Club Special First Prize as part of The Juried Show Exhibition held at Arte Bella Gallery, on Crescent Street, in Montreal. The judges were from The Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
