Monotype explorations on wood panels

Here are my latest explorations of printing monotypes manually directly on small 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm) wood panels.

As the wood panels are rigid, it is not possible to print using a press or to use the standard rigid plexiglass template. During the course of my first explorations I had used mylar as my template but in this instance I opted for transparent plastic wrapping material that I had kept.

To create these monotypes, I first rolled etching inks onto the plastic template(s). I experimented with two ways of working, which can be combined if desired. In the first instance I scraped my drawing directly into the inked surface of the template before applying it to the panel and I used a roller to pressure the ink onto the panel to create the monotype. In the second instance using pressure I drew directly with a pencil or a pen on the back of the inked template which had been applied to the panel to create the monotype.

The people that appear in my monotypes are the product of my imagination but are inspired by my observations and my numerous sketches of people in public spaces.

More monotype explorations will follow.
